TCH 810 Hinged British Police Handcuffs

These are model TCH 810 hinged handcuffs from Total Control Handcuffs (TCH).

As I understand it, these are sometimes carried as an additional or backup set of handcuffs by police. They are more restrictive than the older style chain handcuffs but not as restrictive as rigid handcuffs. They have the usual 3 pawl bar system and push-pin double locking.

This is the standard size, so they can close to a smaller size and won't accommodate very very large people. Modern speedcuffs have the larger "superior" size. So I got these to have the comparison.

They have a very, incredibly strong, 3 bar hinge system. This provides, in my opinion, SO much more strength and mechanical security against brute-force escape attempts. There is a video of someone snapping a peerless hinged handcuff in half that he was cuffed to an interrogation table at the police station in the US. I do not think that would ever work with these TCH hinges.

They are very nice, a matt less reflective nickel finish. Older models of TCH tended to be very very shiny, but I have noticed as time has moved on, they seem to be doing everything in a matt, almost "Smith & Wesson" style nickel finish.

Very high quality. Though unfortunately in my case the brand stamping is not properly formed.

TCH 840 Blue Rigid Speedcuffs Northern Ireland Police Handcuffs

These are the familiar TCH 840 rigid speedcuffs, which have the Northern Ireland blue coloured gripping area.

I have not seen these handcuffs in photos very often but it's a known thing that these were for Northern Ireland. I have seen video footage where they were worn on officers belts, but I was never able to find this again on YouTube.

They have 3 pawl bars and all the other usual TCH features like back-loading and double locking.

The number of colours that TCH 840 speedcuffs come in are black, red, blue and yellow. Black are standard, as used by most police forces. Red are used during training which clearly identify the person in them is not actually under arrest. Yellow have been used by private security, to signify they are not impersonating a police officer, since they do not have the typical black colour. Blue is for Northern Ireland police.

TCH 820 SL Long Chain Handcuffs (7 chain links) for larger people. Includes behind back footage

These are the TCH 820 SL long chain handcuffs. They are the superior (larger size, the same as their 840 speedcuffs) size of the model 800 with 7 chain links instead of 2. This elongated chain makes them very suited for securing people's arms behind their back if they are either very large or have some injury which makes it extremely painful or dangerous for them to get their arms that close behind their back.

The chain on these handcuffs is not the typical type I normally see on TCH. They have more of that metallic-plastic feel which jingles less than usual. The chains are magnetic and real metal and secure but they just feel different and nice.

These have the usual 3 pawl bars for added security and have backloading which makes speed cuffing in a tense situation a bit easier.

The bow alignment is not 100% perfect, but due to how TCH design the ends of the bow, they taper to be thinner at the end which means they are able to seat themselves into the channel in the body of the cuff and affirmatively click closed when you press them onto the wrist. Very nice.

I like these a lot. You never really see these in the wild. I have only ever seen them sold by Nordhandle in Germany. But since I know of these handcuffs existence I ordered them directly from TCH them selves. Along with 3 other items they make which will feature in 1 or more future videos! Somewhat rare TCH 860 Extended Length Hinged Handcuffs (for when comfort or size matters)

These are he somewhat rare TCH 860 extended length hinged handcuffs.

I have never seen any third party website selling these. I have seen one site selling some old Hiatt versions (they have been out of stock for years now...) but when I had the opportunity to acquire a pair of these, freshly made by TCH, I had to get a pair!

These are rock solid handcuffs, as you'd expect from TCH (Total Control Handcuffs). The TCH860 extended length makes them more suited for larger people when handcuffed in the rear, and they have been used by European courts to add some comfort for prisoners during long transport times.

They are very high quality and good secure, as you'd expect. A nice somewhat rare pair of handcuffs!

They have all the usual modern TCH capabilities like 3 pawls, back-loading. The font and technology for stamping the model number and serial appear to be different. Before it felt like it was stamped into the metal but this seems different, like it's made up of tiny dots which reflect light interestingly. Is it laser etched or something? I am not sure. But I like how it looks!

One thing I thought was odd was the actual branding was a bit inconsistent, not very deep at all on one side and one side was VERY faint and hard to see. But it's there decently on one side.

Over all, I really like them and I am happy to have a pair in my collection!

Comparing various handcuffs for securely carrying a case / briefcase, inc the new Alfa Proj 9923!

Well, almost all these handcuffs have pros and cons, except the rigid ones which would have nothing but cons. Things you have to think about...

How long is the chain, will it be visible to everyone?

How loud does the chain jingle and will I announce my presence like Jacob Marley walking down a street?

How secure is the handcuff, can normal keys open it?

Over all I prefer the Alfa Proj (Ralkem) 9923 because it connects to the case via a chain rather than the handcuff having to close around the handle, the chain is not too long, the chain is relatively quiet and the handcuff uses a totally non-standard key, meaning a criminal with a handcuff key who's anticipating to quickly bash, grab & run by using their "normal" cuff key will be thwarted.

The one part which does make more sound is the rectangular connection link. But you could attach this cuff to your case and then put some cello-tape, masking tape, duct tape, scapa tape or whatever else around it just to stop it jangling, since the rest of the chain is quite low noise really.

I am over the moon to have this 9923 back in my collection! An excellent handcuff.

TCH 822 Twinlock Chain Link Handcuffs from UK (has keyholes on both sides) [NIJ]

These are the twin keyhole version of TCH's chain link handcuffs. These are the "Superior" size, the same larger size that all their rigid handcuffs come in.

They are very nice and have all the same usual TCH quality and features, only that they have keyholes on both sides.

I like them.

British TCH HSH1 Maximum Security Hinged Transport Handcuffs

This is the high security or maximum security HSH1 handcuffs from TCH or Total Control Handcuffs. Cylinder lock for double locking.

The same as the Hiatt HSS-9 model, these are truly high security. They use the same standard single lock key as most other handcuffs, but the double lock is operated with a separate wafer lock key. As shown you can operate the handcuffs fully while wearing them in the way I have shown, although trying to pick the wafer lock open without having the key will likely prove totally fruitless.

As I understand it, these handcuffs are only used mainly for transport of maximum risk prisoners, the kind of prisoners that have a high probability of being an imminent threat to the public if they were to escape.

They have the usual 3 pawl bars and high over all quality, fit and finish. The differences are the double lock being operated by a separate key type and the backloading is only 1 click, as the pawl teeth are all uniform, rather than being staggered depths as on their normal models. So to double lock you have to give it a good slap from the inside to double lock.

Don't get your new hinged or folding rigid handcuffs stuck on your arm like this!

Many people this Christmas will have gotten handcuffs. Hinged? Folding Rigid? Handcuffs stuck on one arm ? You may not have the tool to save both you and the cuffs!

In order to not have to resort to cutting the handcuffs off and destroying them, you will need a handcuff shim, which you may not have. It is a strong but thin piece of metal that you force into the pawl area, tighten the cuff one or two clicks while pushing in the shim further, in order to hold the shim in while pulling open the arm of the handcuff.

Best thing is to never ever prank anyone by locking a pair of hinged handcuffs on one person's single arm unless you are sure the keyholes are facing on the outside. Folding rigid handcuffs like Hiatt speedcuffs or TCH 850 only can fold with the keyholes facing inwards.

Be careful.

You could try cutting up a beer can and folding a thin strip in half to double the thickness and try and use that as a shim but there's no guarantees it will be strong enough to not get dented by the pawl bars teeth.

TCH850 Silver Premier Folding Rigid Handcuffs UK British Police (NIJ)

These are the fantastic TCH 850 Premier Folding Rigid Handcuffs used by the British police. NIJ Rated.

These are essentially rigid handcuffs, that can be folded in half to make carrying them easier for police officers and also more covert.

I have a video on a belt pouch designed for these cuffs, with a pair of TCH850B (black model 850) that I used to have.

The fact that they fold means criminals are less likely to notice the tell-tail profile that standard rigid handcuffs have when carried. Also, some officers do not like to have big long handcuffs that could dig into them when they sit down etc. So these are a nice authorised alternative.

They fold in half using the same normal handcuff key you use to operate the usual handcuff locking mechanisms.

Once opened, they stay rigid with only a very very tiny amount of flex, so essentially rigid for all intents and purposes.

Very comfortable for the person wearing them. The gap between the cuff bracelets is slightly longer, meaning when cuffed in front side by side, it is a bit more comfortable. However when cuffed in a rear stack, the slightly increased gap forces the arms higher and lower which could prove to be slightly more uncomfortable for people.

A very very high quality handcuff. A pleasure to have in my collection. I wanted this silver pair from the beginning but I settled on the black due to the discounted price. I got these silver ones at a real bargain price on ebay. Brand new, sealed, boxed everything. I am very happy indeed!

Official Current Latest UK Police TCH 840 Handcuffs Overview (NIJ) Police Supplies HD

This is the official latest standard issue for the UK Police force. The TCH model 840. This edition has keyholes on one side only for security reasons.

This helps to prevent or limit the chance of an offender using tools or keys to escape from the handcuffs.

TCH stands for "Total Control Handcuffs" and is a rebranding of the old HIATT or HIATTS cuffs. They are still made in England using the same factory. Safariland acquired Hiatt sometime around 2010 and after some failures of trying to absorb HIATT into their own branding, they have decided to revert and keep the HIATT brand as a sub-brand of Safariland due to global recognition of the HIATT brand.

So, everything that HIATT had is brought through into the TCH range. Essentially they are one and the same, TCH, Safariland, HIATT. Perhaps in the future new innovations will begin to distinguish TCH from it's HIATTS past.

These are very solid, rigid handcuffs. They allow an officer to have maximum control over a suspect by limiting their movement more effectively than with chain linked handcuffs and having the capability to use the cuffs on pressure points in the wrist to help subdue violent criminals to effectively restrain them. Kind of how martial artists can use pressure points.

An interesting note is the depressions or markings on the back side that show where the keyholes would be created on a pair of Model 842 (I have a video on that model too). This is likely to decrease the cost of production by providing markings for machining the plastic for that model. Or perhaps a demonstration of keyhole placement so people can decide which model they want? This is unknown and has no bearing on the function of the handcuffs.

Very nice handcuffs. However I would like to see the UK Police force transition to hinged handcuffs to still maintain the pressure-point and movement restriction capabilities while at the same time offering a little bit extra comfort for the person. These are great for violent people in my opinion but might be a bit over-kill for an average joe who gets into an argument and is escorted to the station in these. Still, they are high quality and perfect for what they are designed for. Plus they fit larger wrist sizes as these only come in the "Superior" size model. For fitting smaller wrists police officers can acquire the TCH handcuff recuder, which is also overviewed on my channel.

TCH model 930 Aluminium Lightweight Hinged Handcuffs UK Police (NIJ) Police Supplies

This is an overview of the TCH930 lightweight aluminium (or aluminum if you're in the USA) hinged handcuffs.

They are really great quality. The more TCH I buy, the higher the quality feels. Strange how that happens. These are decidedly lower weight than any of my other TCH handcuffs. The tolerances are astronomically right. No play or wiggle at all in the ratchet bar when closed and double locked.

TCH model 850B Folding Rigid Handcuffs UK Police (TCH850 Covert Black) (NIJ) Police Supplies

This is an overview look at the TCH850 folding rigid handcuffs, in black. They are as expected NIJ certified. These are used by UK police when they need covert handcuff capability. They are concealable in a pocket when folded and the black color helps hide their visual presence in the dark. I like these handcuffs a lot. Same usual great TCH quality.

In the next video I visually compare the sizing between the TCH 840 series (842) and the 850. Surprisingly the 850 handcuffs are further apart than the cuffs on the 840 series.

EDIT: 08/12/2016 (UK date format) I won't be buying any more TCH or any other brand cuffs that are black via oxide/bluing. Rust is ridiculous. I had to clean thick orange rust from the inside skin-contact areas of the cuffs the other week. Even they aren't being used. I do not want high maintenance cuffs. I have since cleaned them up again. Due to the heavy cost, in the future I might buy a non-black version of these but that is low priority.

Official UK Police TCH 842 Handcuffs Overview (NIJ) (Successor to TCH840) Police Supplies

This is a brand new (not ex-police) pair of TCH model 842 handcuffs, also known as Speedcuffs. Of course NIJ certified for law enforcement use world wide. I  am really impressed with these. I have never had a pair of 840 range or in fact any rigid or hinged handcuffs at all until today. I can see why police prefer them. Let me explain.

Firstly, as they are rigid, they extremely limit your degree of movement while at the same time allowing a police officer to cause pain to the wrist/arm in case of struggle, even if only one cuff is on the suspect.

In the video I only show both hands out front, as you would expect to see someone in chain handcuffs when cuffed to the front. I actually assumed this would be more comfortable than the "stack" arrangement that police use where the handcuffs are vertical and one hand pops out the left and one hand pops out the right. The stack is far more comfortable but was more difficult to show on the video given my setup.

These have 3 pawl bars, as expected which makes it a bit more difficult for people to stick things in the keyway and pick them. Also makes shimming slightly harder in that you need a full width shim to ensure you pull down all 3 pawls.

A very high quality handcuff, better designed than even my model 800 TCH handcuffs.

This is the slightly more expensive TCH model 842 not the common TCH 840 you see all over youtube that police mainly use. There is one KEY difference which I will leave the video to demonstrate ;) but for all intents and purposes they are the exact same handcuff with one glaring exception that makes these more suited to the average collector, in my opinion as you will see demonstrated in the video.

TCH 800 handcuffs overview (Same brand as UK police) NIJ Certified Police Supplies

This is a little look at the TCH 800 handcuffs. Standard size, nickel plated version. These feel very solid and high quality and they work well. One point to notice is that the chain connection on these handcuffs makes the handcuffs closer together than the Viper. This provides more security and more difficulty to open them from behind your back. Although, following the tips in the previous video, that can help you to get the key into the keyhole. These are made by TCH, the same brand that supplies the UK police force with their rigid models. So expect the same good quality. Mine came completely void of any lubrication, which was good since I could use graphite powder immediately since there was no oil or anything in there. So you may want to get some 3-in-one oil or graphite powder to lubricate everything. Handcuff maintenance is important. TCH 822B Dual Keyhole Black Superior (XL) size handcuffs overview

This is a brief overview of the TCH model 822B dual keyhole handcuffs. These are a high quality black pair of handcuffs, in the extra large size, known as "Superior" size. TCH has replaced Hiatt for use by UK police forces. They use the rigid model TCH840 and the 840 only comes in the Superior size.
The build quality is great, the features are great, you have two locks on each cuff for ease of uncuffing, you have backloading feature to quickly get the ratchet in the perfect position for handcuffing people, along with everything you would expect in a handcuff like double locking etc. They are also NIJ Approved.
This particular pair I received is slightly defective since the angled keyholes on the reverse side sometimes fail to open due to the double locking pin being too loose, which means you have to keep turning the key both directions even if you have not specifically double locked the cuffs if you use that angled keyhole. The normal straight keyhole always works, as expected.
I will be sending these back soon, but just because my pair were defective please don't feel dissuaded from buying them, someone somewhere will always buy something that is defective, no matter if it's a car, a space shuttle or a pair of handcuffs :)
I have placed a new order for the Nickle plated standard size, normal 1 keyhole per cuff versions of these handcuffs in the meantime while I arrange to send these back.
