Hiatt-Thompson 1010 Chain link Red Police Handcuffs

These are the Hiatt-Thompson 1010 chain link handcuffs in the colour RED. They are genuine US police handcuffs.

This company is no longer around but I have a feeling there is a connection to CTS Thompson because even the model number is the same as the CTS Thompson models. (Don't visit the website on the box. After the company was no more, they didn't renew the domain to keep control over it and so it has been acquired by people in China and is riddled with adverts and NSFW material)

These have 2 pawls and they also backload, which is nice. They also have a split double locking bar, which means if you are picking these open, you must pick both levers to disengage the double lock. It sounds like you unlocked it, it feels like you unlocked it, but they are still double locked until you pick the second lever! The ratchet is strong and loud.

Nice to add one of this brand to my collection, though it is a very typical handcuff but with twin double locking bars, and in a nice red colour.

ASP model 100 Red Training Handcuffs with Slip Pawls (factory gimmicked)

However I found it odd that they would leave the double lock functionality intact...!?! Whenever I, myself, gimmick a handcuff, I always do my best to deactivate the double lock to ensure only the single lock functions. When people training to apply handcuffs, they have to learn to use the double lock and when they do during training, the wearer cannot pull the cuffs off. So... not sure why they wouldn't just simulate the double lock feature but just not have it actually double lock. But that's just me.

What I have done since recording, is take some JB Weld Steel Stik epoxy putty to make tiny "door stops" for the hidden section of the double lock. So once I re-insert the lock-sets, the double lock won't engage because the space it needs to move outwards into, has some shaped hard epoxy putty I can slip in or remove if I want to make the double lock work again. So now there is zero chance of them double locking. This is good if you want to put the training locks in a normal set of ASP for single lock picking or as a costume prop, because if anyone puts them on, nobody can troll the wearer by double locking them to get them "stuck". If you would like me to make a video demonstrating this double lock deactivation "door stop" let me know.

These are in pretty good condition, no obvious cracking in the polymer. They are basically a yellow security cuff but with the only difference that the pawl's teeth are angled on both sides to allow the bow to pull open rather than only push closed.

ASP Rigid Ultra Cuff 600 TRAINING Red pawl handcuffs

Just got back from a dog walk, please excuse my Darth Vader sound! This is the training version of the ASP model 600 rigid handcuffs. They are made from forged aluminum or aluminium as known in the UK, with steel bows. The red pawls and red body indicators signify that this is a training model. If that is not sufficient, it has in 5 places stamped on it TRAINING ONLY in case anyone does not know the meaning of the red colouration.

This handcuff is designed for easy training, to speed things up, since when single locked, the wearer can pull them off without the operator having to use a key on each bracelet. This can speed up training. Also for people interested in picking handcuffs, it offers a safety feature so that the wearer can get out of them in case their picking attempts fail.

This technology is commonly referred to in the magic/escapology community as "Gimmicking". The concept of gimmicking is that there is an alternative mechanism to get out of the handcuffs without having to properly use a key. Usually a quick mechanism. This particular type of gimmicking is referred to as "bridge jumpers" because it was used by magicians etc to escape handcuffs in an instant when jumping from a bridge or building into a body of water, where every tiny moment matters. Some types of gimmicking are more elaborate and able to withstand audience inspection etc. This style is very basic and makes a loud zipping sound when you escape them, so they are not best suited for magic tricks, though they work great as a safety feature during training or lockpicking experiments.

Long ago there were some red-pawl ASP handcuffs made which were NOT "escapable" training models. So if buying second hand, ask the seller and test them yourself to be sure they are what you expect.

They are very nice. The body of the handcuffs is absolutely identical to any other of their similar handcuffs. The only difference is the fact that red is ONLY used for training models and they also have TRAINING ONLY stamped on them. If you were to remove the red locksets and replace with a standard "real" lockset of yellow, green or blue, you would have an entirely secure and fully functional handcuff. The magic of this capability is entirely in the pawls / locksets which have the red double locking window.

Anyway, hopefully this has enlightened you as to the purpose and capabilities of the red "training only" models of ASP handcuffs.

🚨🔗🇺🇸 Peerless 750C Blood Red (EPP Technology) American Police Handcuffs [NIJ]

These are Peerless 750C handcuffs in a nice deep red colour, like a nice blood red. These are the same as the blue ones I recently showed, just a different colour to show you. I had to get them, they look really nice. I think I like them more than the blue ones.

They only have 1 pawl, which is a shame, as with most of the handcuff industry, they could split the pawl bar and double locking bar in half and add some small extra security for no cost but they keep it the same. Still, they are very very good quality and work well and are genuinely used by police around the world. They are NIJ rated.

Kyung Chang Handcuffs KCH 010 Lightweight [NIJ]

These are the Kyung Chang Lightweight KCH 010 handcuffs in pink colour.

They are a South Korean police grade handcuff which are very lightweight. They have 3 pawls, steel bows, aluminium / aluminum body and come with 2 special keys which are best suited for these handcuffs.

Normal "standard" universal handcuff keys work in these handcuffs HOWEVER, it is crucially important that you get to know which way to turn for the double lock and if you use a standard key, STOP TURNING as soon as you have disengaged the double lock. If you keep turning that same direction after you have disengaged the double lock, the key will be stuck and you will be trapped in the handcuffs. Kyung Chang handcuffs are very nice, however please do be careful if you end up using different keys in them... The keys they come with are perfect and you have nothing to worry about, but do not be the person on a 999 or 911 recording asking for help because you got trapped in handcuffs using an ill-suited key! That kind of video would go public, be shared and stay with you forever and everyone would know. Not a good image!

USA Police & Prison ~ Peerless 850C Red Hinged Handcuffs NIJ Certified

These are all American Peerless model 850C hinged handcuffs in red colour or color if you're from the US :).

Typically coloured handcuffs such as these are less used by police, although do get used from time to time, but usually a prison or court will colour code the clothing issued to prisoners with the handcuffs and everything else (shoes etc), so if someone dressed in all red tries to leave the building, for example, then everyone knows to apprehend them immediately.

These are really high quality handcuffs, I have to say. The tolerances are really low and everything fits just perfectly. The hinge connector design provides a slightly higher degree of movement rather than a more constricted design. Although they are a similar wrist size capacity as TCH/HIATT Superior size, such that the UK Police use.

One thing to note, these are NIJ certified for legitimate law enforcement use but do not secure a prisoner to an immovable object by one wrist cuffed and one attached to the object. This hinge design can be snapped if a strong prisoner puts their full force and strength into snapping them. This is ONLY possible because of the excessive force that can be applied without crippling pain. If both wrists are cuffed with these handcuffs, the force the person can apply is really low and would end up snapping their wrists, orders of magnitudes before they would ever break the hinge.
